General Description:
The Miniature Schnauzer is a strong, active terrier type breed standing at 12-14 inches to the shoulder. They are cousins to the Standard Schnauzer breed. Aside to their size difference, they resemble the Standard Schnauzer in appearance. Their thick beard and eyebrows give the miniature schnauzers a pleasant attractive look. They have a square-shaped build. They have a double coat - a wiry outercoat and a soft undercoat. They were breed and created to be the all-around farm dog. They are attractively strong, athletic and muscular, they lack fear, but are not aggressive. They are intelligent and have a personality twice as big as they are. This breed is generally healthy, and low shedding. These are the breeds considered to be hypoallergenic dogs and are probably a better choice for allergy sufferers than other dog breeds. History:

They were developed in the mid-late 19th century in Germany by crossbreeding the Standard Schnauzer with smaller breeds, such as the Miniature Pinscher. In Germany, they are known as the Zwergschnauzer (zwerg means "dwarf").

Personality:
A miniature schnauzer is full of life and energy. Their temperament can be described as alert and spirited, as well as obedient and friendly. They are very intelligent, which makes training easy. They will become your lap dog and love affection. They are very playful and usually good with other household pets. They are naturally suscipous, so barking is a general trait for this breed. They are excellent watchdogs and have a good territorial instinct. The miniature schnauzer has a strong prey-drive from their breeding history, so they instinctly chase smaller mammals or other dogs entering their territory Even though they are bold and fiesty, they are not agressive. When a guest or stranger approraches your property they will bark and run to the person(s), however wants affection and attention when they arrive to them. Like every dog, early socialization for this breed is beneficial. Exposure to different people, sights, sounds, locations, and various ages of people will help your pup to become a well-rounded dog. |
This Breed Around Children:
Miniature Schnauzers love to socialize with people. They want to be where the action is and is always interested in what you are doing. They will even follow you to the bathroom. They are great with children, especially if they are raised with them. They are naturally playful, so being around children will be a big help for them to release some of their built up energy. They are a great combination. As with every breed, it is appropriate to always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise interactions between dogs and young chiildren. It is recommended no matter how friendly a dog is to never leave young children unsupervised with any animal. |
